Identification
Item: Hawker's Hut, Morwenstow Cliffs, near Bude, Cornwall.
Description: The Rev. Stephen Hawker built his hut on Morwenstow cliffs from wood from shipwrecks. Here he wrote poetry including 'The Quest of the Sangraal' on the theme of The Holy Grail in 1863. (In the Holy Grail legend, it was the chalice which Jesus drank from at the Last Supper. The story is part of Arthurian legend). R.S Hawker (1803-1875) was appointed Vicar of Morwenstow in 1834 and served there for the rest of his life. He built the Vicarage, with chimneys based on local churches, Oxford towers and his mother's tomb. Much of his mission was giving proper burials to drowned sailors. His biography by S. Baring-Gould (Onward Christian Soldiers) includes many unreliable legends. He wrote 'Trelawney' and 'The Ringers of Launcells Tower' - the inspiration for a painting now in Bude Castle. Rev Hawker devised the first Harvest Festival (as we know it today). He dressed unconventionally.
