Item: The Truro Savings Bank, Truro, Cornwall.
Description: An view of the Truro Savings Bank behind a fence and closed gate. The bank with 'Truro Savings Bank' on its facade was founded in 1818, although it first seemed to have occupied the site on Union Place which was later taken over by the Truro Dispensary. The Bank moved into its premises on River Street in 1847 after the foundation stone had been laid there in 1845. In 1895, the premises came up for auction, but the Savings Bank remained there until 1898 when it finally closed. The Royal Cornwall Gazette of Thursday 2 June 1898, announces that the premises were to be used as a School of Mining, until 1908 when the building was bought by Truro Museum although it was unable to open until 1919.
