Item: Pistol Meadow, The Lizard, Cornwall.
Description: Pistol Meadow is located between Old Lizard Head and Polpere Cove facing the Lizard Point. This is a view across the meadow, with an open gate looking towards the sea. The Royal Anne was a troop ship with 42 cannons launched in 1707. On 10 November 1721, under Captain Francis, it was bound for Barbados with its new Governor, Lord Bethaven, when it hit a gale off the Lizard. Only two people survived; 207 were drowned. A Christian burial was denied so the ship's company was buried in a mass grave, in Pistol Meadow at the bottom of the valley.
