Identification

Item: Boskenna Cross, a wheal-headed wayside cross near St Buryan, Cornwall.

Description: Situated by the B3315 at the junction of the road from St Buryan to Lamorna, the Boskenna wheal-headed cross was discovered in 1869. Originally in the middle of the road, the cross head and short portion of the shaft were fixed to an old granite roller, with a millstone and the base of a cider press to form a two-stepped base. The cross head displays a figure of Christ with arms outstretched. It suffered over the years from being in the middle of the road and in 1941 was hit by an army lorry (the US troops were billeted at Boskenna). The council removed it to its present position by the lay-by, but in very bad weather conditions, a depression in the middle of the road junction can be seen where the cross originally stood. The height of the cross is just under 2ft 6".
