Identification
Item: Gulval Cross, Gulval, Cornwall.
Description: An unusual granite stone at Gulval Church moved from this site to the left of the church porch in the late 19th century. According to the Archaeological Societies Mick Aston, Teresa Hall, Professor Rosemary Cramp, Ann Preston-Jones and Andrew Langdon, this large block of coarse granite with carvings on four facings is 9th or 10th century. Set in the top is a lantern crosshead of a late medieval cross. In 2013, the team set up spotlights and mirrors one night and took photographs of all four sides, on the south side, it looks like an angel holding a book, on the north face a seated figure holding a lyre, on the west face seems to be an evangelist seated and writing and on the east face a possible figure of David struggling with a lion.
