A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Boston Sea Stallion LT293 and the Balmoral of Southampton

Description: The Boston Sea Stallion was built at Great Yarmouth in 1978, one of a class of stern trawlers built for the Boston Group of Lowestoft. In 1984 it was converted to be a stand by vessel for the oil rigs. One of several Boston boats, like the Boston Sea Stallion, Boston Sea Knight and the Boston Sea Ranger, to come to Cornwall she came during the mackerel boom of the 1970s. The latter was lost with her 8 crew on 5 December 1977. She took a sea over the stern which flooded her hold and caused her to capsize in less than 8 minutes. MV Balmoral was built in 1949 by Thorneycroft of Southampton as a ferry boat for Southampton to Cowes. Carrying 750 passengers, she is an 2013 as an excursion ship with the paddle steamer Waverly, after being re-engined in 2002.
