A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: The May of Ipswich leaving Penzance Harbour

Description: The May of Ipswich was built by Cann for Cranfield Brothers Ltd of Ipswich, in Harwich in 1891 weighing 57 tons. She was sold in 1964 to Silverton Services Ltd (Tate and Lyle) for occasional trade under sail and company charter based at St Katherines Yacht haven. She was transported to the Canadian Lakes for the 1976 Olympic Games. She was a successful racing barge between 1972 and 1993 and carried 50 tons of Portland Stone for restoration of St Paul's Cathedral. Such barges were to be seen in the Thames Estuary and East Coast from the Victorian era until 1939. She was owned by John Hooker and Arthur John Haste from 1891; by Cranfield Brothers for the grain trade from 1912; by Carned Sugar to train apprentices and offer company hospitality, corporate and private charter from 1964 and by Thames and Orwell Marine Services for charter from 2011.
