Item: The crew of the Scillonian closing her hatches on leaving Penzance Harbour
Description: A replacement for the veteran 1926 steamship Scillonian, Scillonian ll, was built by Thornycroft of Southampton. She was a twin screw diesel ship of 820 tons, 921 gross. She entered into service on 25 March 1956, able to carry 500 passengers and a crew of 14. She was 208' long and could achieve 15.5 knots. She was replaced in 1977 and sold to P and A Campbell as Devonia. After a long career with different owners she was finally owned by a Greek Cypriot ship owner under the name 'Olga J'. The ship and her crew were abandoned by her owner in Bourgos, Bulgaria where she sank, sometime after 1998.
