Description: A wartime measure to improve the health of children was the introduction of a daily one third of a pint bottle of full cream milk. The paper straw was issued with it from a carton. The Conservative Minister for Education, Margaret Thatcher, in her first cabinet role under Edward Heath's goverment, abolished the practice. The boy appears to be wearing his school jumper, a hand knitted affair with a coloured stripe around the V neck for identity and possible a cap left over from the visit of the American military in the 1940s.
