Identification
Item: Early morning fish sales in Newlyn Fish Market
Description: Trawl and line fish are laid out in lots on the market floor. The central gates of the market from the Strand are open and hooked back to act as barriers each side of the slip down to the road about a metre lower. The people on the left against the harbour side railing are either buyers for the next sale or visitors. The sale would start about 0700 hours. A small pile of conger awaiting sale lies in the right foreground. Immediately behind, bright shining aluminium kits are hired out by Newlyn Harbour by the day to fish sellers or buyers to move the fish about the port. These replaced wooden ones in the 1950s. The hose and reel in the centre of the picture are used to wash down the floor after the sale.
