Item: Boscastle Harbour
Description: This is a 1960s view of the 1547 quay at Boscastle which had fallen into ruins. Following a Petition to Parliament in 1584, Grenville’s pier was built, restored in 1740 by Sir R Grenville. Boscastle was the port for Launceston, exporting corn, slate and bark for tanning. From 1815 to 1840 manganese ore was exported, China clay from 1865. It had its own fleet of coasting vessels trading with Gloucester, Bristol and South Wales. It imported provisions, coal, manure and limestone. It is a natural inlet, the only significant harbour for 20 miles along this part of the north coast of Cornwall.
