Item: Boscastle Harbour
Description: The 1547 quay at Boscastle fell into ruins. Following a Petition (to Parliament) in 1584, Grenville’s pier was built, restored in 1740 by Sir R Grenville. Boscastle was the port for Launceston, exporting corn, slate and bark for tanning. From 1815 to 1840 manganese ore was exported, China clay from 1865. It had its own fleet of coasting vessels trading with Gloucester, Bristol and South Wales. It imported provisions, coal, manure and limestone.
