Identification
Item: An oil painting of Penzance Harbour around 1800
Description: This photograph is of a painting of Penzance Harbour. Judging from the rig and style of sterns in the vessels on the left, this painting probably dates from the late 17th century. The old St Mary's Chapel of Ease with its distinctive spire was demolished in the summer of 1832. Below it are the large buildings at the bottom of Lady or Chapel Street. The site to the right later housed the Gas Works and other semi-industrial buildings and warehouses. The larger vessels on the left lie under Penzance Pier upon which the artist must have been seated. This area is known as Tin Man's Hole as it is where the tin ships lay in between their quarterly voyages to the Royal Mint in the Tower of London with about 50 tons of ingots of tin. Calling in at Falmouth, they returned with a wide range of natural and manufactured goods for the Penzance shopkeepers and merchants.
