Identification
Item: Six boatmen from St Michael's Mount
Description: This photograph shows the boatmen or hicklers from St Michael's Mount in full dress livery in 1883. The uniform, totally unpractical for rowing, was modelled on that of the Thames Watermen in the mid 19th century. The hat is made of leather and was similar to a miner's helmet. The jacket was made of a very heavy felt material with part of the family coat of arms on the buttons. The shield on the left arm has the family coat of arms and served as their licence. The 'royal' barge which these men would have used is still in service in 2011.
