A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Item: Chysauster courtyard houses

Description: Chysauster courtyard houses - the village was occupied from 100 BC to the third century AD. It consists of four houses on each side of a winding street. Outside is another house and the remains of other buildings, including a fougou. All houses have a similar layout on an east-west axis with the entrance at the east. The diameter is approximately 27.43.m (90'). There is a passage from the entrance to an inner courtyard approximately 7.62 m (25') in diameter. On the far side of the courtyard is a small circular room with chambers radiating from it. Rooms for storage and living were built into the walls which are up to 4.28 m (14') thick. In some houses there is evidence of covered stone drains. A quern for grinding grain can be seen at the site as can a collapsed fougou. The inhabitants lived by farming, raising livestock and possibly tin streaming. There is evidence of enclosures where livestock would have been coralled. Chysauster may have come under the protection of the hill fort of Castle an Dinas 1.2 km (.75 ) of a mile to the East.
