Item: Tregaseal Barrow,Scillonian Chamber Tomb
Description: This entrance grave has an oval mount 12.5m (41') by 9.4m (31') and up to 1.4 m (4.5') high with about a third of its kerb remaining. Its chamber takes a form of a pasage 3.3 m (11') long and 1.2 m (4') wide with an entrance blocked by a single upright slab facing south-east. Only the inner two roofing stones remain. It had a well paved floor on which cremated bones, broken pottery and a small perforated whetstone were found. The excavator in 1879 was W C Borlase who found that the mound had an inner retaining wall. The most remarkable find was that of a small cist which had been put in the inner end of the chamber at a later date. It contained a Bronze Age urn which stood upside down over cremated bones. It can be found in the British Museum.
