Item: The Old Guildhall at Looe
Description: The Old Guildhall, which in 1955 was a reading room and small museum, has a gable porch reached by an outside flight of steps. Across the front of the gable is preserved the old pillory and indoors are the old stocks, the scold's cage and the original magistrate's bench from which offenders were sentenced to stocks and pillory. Here is the insignia of the old corporation. Two 17th century maces have shafts ornamented with foliage and scroll-work and a brass seal has the device of a single masted ship with two men in it. Two punch bowls each have a view of the medieval bridge the present one replaced; their ladles are of silver-mounted whalebone. Stored away are the hats and cloaks once worn by the sergeants at mace and constables' staves 2.1 m (seven feet) long.
