A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: St. Hilary : the Hoti Hoti Stone

Description: This stone was found in March 1853 after the destruction of St Hilary Church by fire. Blight recorded that it was found at the north-west angle of the Church, 2' below the level of the floor. By 1858 the stone was described as placed close to the church yard gate, on the right hand side of the walk leading to the Church porch. It is 1.93 metres x 0.52 metres x 0.26 metres. The inscription, interpreted by Blight, is "to Flavius Julius (or Junior) Constantius or Constaninuus, the pious and august Caesar, son of the divine and pious Constantine the Great."
