Item: Sennen Cross
Description: This is Sennen Churchtown orTreeve photographed from beside the main road from Lands End, with the First and Last Inn on the left and the Dower House built by the Vingo family with its attic windows and the Sennen cross in the field. The OS map 25 of 1877 shows the cross in this field It is a farming settlement which can trace its history back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Treeve first appears in surviving documents as Treryf in 1334 and as Treruffe and Treyeuff in 1668. In a note dated 5 May 1864 John Thomas Blight wrote that this cross lay across a little stream at Trevear Barton, Sennen, where it was in use as a footbridge. It has a quite distinctive design, resembling a soft, long ribbon bow. In about 1890 the cross was moved to the new cemetery adjacent to the old Sunday School, north of the church and in 1955 it was moved to Sennen Churchyard where it can be found in 2011.
