Magic lantern slide
Acc.no: PEZPH : 2009.490
Identification
Item: Pilchard Drivers putting to sea from Newlyn about 1900
Description: Probably pictured in Mounts Bay, from Newlyn Pier head, the nearest lugger has a transom stern which was more common after 1902, but not unknown before then. At least 24 boats are in this shot which was taken on a calm evening with an oily sea. There is just enough wind to give the boats steerage way so nobody had to resort to the laborious 'sweeps' to make their offing.
