Description: The Serpentine Works were built on the site of the old smelting house of the Wherrytown Mine for the London and Penzance Serpentine Company. Serpentine was fashionable in Victorian times and used to decorate churches. Following the Royal visit in 1846, Queen Victoria ordered some for Osborne House. The Serpentine Works boasted spacious workshops and machinery worked by steam. The derelict site was bought by Bedford Bolitho who re-used the stone for the gardens he built on this site.
