Item: Postmen of the Navy at Penzance
Description: Royal Marines handling the mail bags at Penzance are seen acting here as naval postmen. Behind them are the steamers Lyonnesse and the Lady of the Isles alongside the pier, the stern of the latter just appearing through the railings on the right. The presence of the Lady of the Isles moored here dates this scene before 1904. The picture was probably taken during the visit of the Fleet in 1904. Note the circular inset in the granite paving of the quay marking the spot where the old warping capstan once stood.
