Identification
Item: Servicing the Runnel Stone buoy
Description: Trinity House seamen servicing a warning buoy, possibly one marking the outer edge of the Runnelstone Reef. The Runnel Stone, or Rundle Stone, is a hazardous rock pinnacle situated about 1 mile south of Gwennap Head, Cornwall that used to show above the surface at low water until a steamship struck it in 1923. This is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the UK with Wolf Rock Lighthouse and the infamous Runnel Stone Reef close by. It has seen many shipwrecks and lives lost. This buoy featured several warning devices including a red and white painted cage for daytime visibility, a gas powered flashing light for night time visibility. Acetylene gas was probably stored within the cage. A compressed air whistle or hooter sounded as a fog warning. The action of the waves compressing a column of air in a central tube system would activate the sound.
