Identification
Item: St John's Hall, celebration of the end of the South African Wars
Description: This shows a formal celebration outside St John's Hall Penzance with the Mayor addressing the crowd in the afternoon sunshine. The Union Flag is behind and in front of the dignitaries. It could be part of the celebrations of 2 June 1902 to mark the British Victory in the South African Wars. What is clear from this group of photographs is the huge support for the cause. Mafeking was under siege from14 October 1899 to16 May 1900. Baden Powell's leadership made him a household name and the statue to the fallen in the Boer War in the Morrab Gardens wears a uniform similar to that of the Boy Scouts Association which he founded and the war was keenly followed by the local papers.
