Identification
Item: Strolling in Alexandra Road
Description: This is a picture of Alexandra Road, Penzance opened by Princess Alexandra, the Danish wife of the future Edward VII on 24 July 1865. The well established avenue of trees suggest that this picture was taken some time later. A memorial was erected at the junction with the promenade in honour of the visit of Princess of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. It was removed in the 1940s, the lamp re-erected outside Penzance Public Library and the commemorative stone at the entrance to the Magpies' football ground. In 2011, the houses remain, but the observatory atop Holbein House does not.
