Item: The greasy pole competition at the East End Regatta, Penzance, 1905
Description: In 1905, the Greasy Pole event attracted four prizes: The 1st prize of 7s 6d was won by Mr A. Dunn, 2nd prize of 5s was won by Mr W.G. Williams, Mr T. Edhouse won the 3rd prize of 4s and the 4th prize of 3s was won by Mr W.T. Welsh.The East End Regatta was very much a working man's occasion which took place annually from the 1880s to the 1910s. Held in Penzance Harbour, it was limited to a couple of hours either side of high tide and took place at the end of the summer. In this greasy pole contest, the winner would have won 7s 6d (37pence).
