Item: Penzance School of Art
Description: The new 1880 building of the School of Art, Penzance, it is said, was the first such school in the West of England. Paid for by public subscription, it was designed by Sylvanus Trevail, FRIBA and still functions as an Art School in 2011. The Mayoress, Mrs Wellington, laid the foundation stone in 1886 to an adjacent extension with exhibition space on its left which eventually became part of this Art School. It is built of granite with two red terracotta plaques built into its façade. On the left is the Borough Arms of St John the Baptist, on the right is the rose, thistle and crowned shamrock. A School of Science was built to the left again, and that became a free library for the public. The future is uncertain for when Penwith College takes over the adjacent public library in 2015. The road to the right of the picture led to the home of the Branwells and to Well Fields. This area is in 2011 Penlee Park housing the Penlee House Museum and a car park.
