Item: Residents of the lower part of Alexandra Road clearing up after a flood
Description: Below sea level, this area off Penzance Promenade is prone to flooding, especially when the combination of high winds and high tides breaks through sea defences. The photo depicts the misery of clearing up after the deluge. In 2011 it is the site of the Beachfield Hotel. Alexandra Road was officially opened by Princess Alexandra on 24 July 1865. To the right is the site are the Alexandra Gardens built on land donated to the people of Penzance by Thomas Robins Bolitho in 1903.
