Item: Penzance and the Wherry Town Mine
Description: This is a photograph of an engraving of Mounts Bay from The Lidden. On 21 March 1957, this print was reproduced in the Cornishman, heading an article about the Wherry Town Mine. It is an 1836 print belonging to A J Saundry of Chapel Street, Penzance. It is described as a view of Penzance and the Wherry Town Mine. Beds of 4’ thick peat and waterlogged tree trunks had recently been uncovered in the area of the mine. Artistic licence allows cattle, sheep and a well dressed couple to share the sunny field in the foreground. Beyond a belt of trees lies the Wherry Town Mine, with smoke from its chimney stack obligingly blowing out to sea. Battery Rocks, the old St Mary's Church Tower, Roger's Folly at Badger's Cross and St Michael's Mount feature in this bucolic view of the area.
