Item: Market Jew Street, Penzance, the Premises of J Bond, engineer, c.1880
Description: This is the shop of John Bond, Engineer, Brass founder and Bell Hanger, which stood at 100 Market Jew Street, in 2011 the site of Boots the Chemist. It was founded sometime between 1864, when the premises were occupied by George Izzard, Cabinet Maker,and 1871 when Bond employed four men and three boys. In 1881 it employed six men and six boys. In 1881 the family consisted of John Bond aged 47 years; wife Elizabeth 43 years; daughter Christine 16 years; Mary J 7 years and John Junior aged 6 months who died by 1891. The Kelly Directory states : Engineer, Machinist; Ironmonger; Electrical and ordinary; Bell Hanger; Hot Water Engineer and General Smith. Rabbit nets and a bird cage can be seen in the window with flaskets, distemper brushes, linen baskets and buckets in the doorway.
