A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Trinity House steamer dried out at low tide in Penzance

Description: The main feature of the photograph is the Trinity House steam tender at her moorings. It is possibly the Mermaid, Warden or Alert. Construction of the north arm of the new floating dock is in progress as well as the base of the bastion that was to carry the new swing bridge to the Abbey Basin and dry dock. To the left, the earlier wharves fronting the Trinity House depot and Matthew's sawmills and ship-yard have yet to be obscured by the new west wall of the dock and theTrinity House slip runs down left to right across the face of this old wharf.
