A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Item: Attendees of a May Ball in Cambridge around 1926

Description: A photograph of the attendees of a May Ball in Cambridge around 1926. Sybil Branwell is standing in the back row, 18th from the left. She was the grandchild of JR Branwell, who lived at Penlee House. Magin Hancock also stands in the back row, 19th from the left. His mother, Ada (nee Branwell) and Alfred Branwell were 1st cousins. Sybil and Magin were therefore second cousins. The location is outside St John's College, which Magin attended. On the reverse side is written some thoughts of Elizabeth Trewhella, first cousin of Magin - 'I know they attended at least one of these balls together, Sybil having driven her father's car up from PZ in her parents' absence, and without their knowledge!'

Condition: Good - top right-hand corner bent over, two small tears to bottom and top of photograph
