Identification
Item: The Esplanade, Penzance
Description: The Esplanade, Penzance, one of many images of the Penzance area taken by Robert Preston and contained within an album. This is the Esplanade, Penzance before the promenade was built. from opposite the bottom of Queen Street showing the Queen's Hotel, complete with observatory and flag. To the right of the hotel is Drew's Serpentine Works. Note the breakwaters which helped retain sand for the beach and the comparatively low level of the railing before the promenade was built. The chimney stack to the left is Wherrytown Serpentine Works and the stack to the right is Bodilly's Mill. You can see what is now the Beachfield Hotel with Wherrytown to its right. Points of interest are the brush on the ground, the clean if poorly maintained pavement, the metal fencing in front of the properties and the street lamp.
