Identification
Item: Penzance from Alexandra Terrace
Description: Penzance from Alexandra Terrace, one of many images of the Penzance area taken by Robert Preston and contained within an album. This is Penzance looking eastwards from Alexandra Terrace. Houses to the right comprise Wherrytown which was demolished in the 20th century because the sea regularly flooded this area. The terrace on the extreme right was Coastguards Row. Mid right is the side of the 1890 Norton Bath complex, with shops behind the portico, opposite the Folly House. Adjacent can be seen the observatory of the 1862 Queen’s Hotel. To the left of the middle of the picture is the bell tower of St Mary's Church which is a landmark for seafarers. To the left is the roof of the (1813) Methodist Church in Chapel Street. Behind Hosking’s (Alexandra) Dairy is Bay View Terrace. Mennaye Farm is in the centre of the picture. The timber yard has caravans at the far end and in 2013 is the site of the Co-op and Lidll’s, with the Boating Pool where the trees stand. There is a possibility that this picture was taken in the aftermath of the 1891 Great Blizzard.
