Identification
Item: A Cornish Fishwife
Description: Cornish Fishwife, Blanche Reynolds from Newlyn is one of many images of the Penzance area taken by Robert Preston and contained within an album, Cornish Fishwife. The lady who is seen here in the clothes of a typical fishwife lived in Newlyn. Because their job was to sell from door to door or in the market place, the clothes had to be tough and washable. Their bonnets were of a special shape to hold the hemp strap which was attached to the basket or creel. The frills under the bonnet and heavy shawl were to protect them from the moisture of the fish which drained from the cowl. The heavy linen apron has a coloured cloth tucked into the waistband and was used for wiping their hands.
