Identification
Item: Newlyn, Penlee Stone Quarries, c.1920-21
Description: One man looks out from the office doorway, one leans against the tram; a workman looks on. Disused quarry equipment lies in the foreground with low fencing guarding the drop to the stone silos below. To the left is the mine stack of the long abandoned West Tolvaddon mine. To its right is a makeshift bridge, atop a wall under construction, to carry an upper tramway, possibly for tipping spoil onto the foreshore below. Another tramway crosses the road. The obstruction caused by the rails and the poor condition of the road was a constant complaint from Paul Urban District Council.
