Identification

Item: Fisher Girls gutting Herrings

Description: This picture shows a number of Scottish fisher girls 'rousing' at a 'farlane'. Rousing was the process of cleaning gutting, salting and packing the herring into barrels. The 'farlanes' were huge wooden troughs on stands in which the fresh herring were put ready for gutting, etc. They were the property of the herring merchants buying the fish and were carted or shipped around the country to the various ports as the seasonal migration of the herring moved through the different fishing grounds. The Scottish fisher girls came to Plymouth, St Ives and Newlyn at times, but from the large number of barrels stacked in the background, this picture was taken at one of the major herring ports on the east coast of Scotland or England.
