Item: Helston Station 50th Anniversary of the 1st GWR Bus service from Helston to the Lizard.
Description: At Helston Station on 17 August 1953, this is the unveiling of the plaque for the 50th anniversary of the first G.W.R Bus Service from Helston to the Lizard with Mayor of Helston, Joseph Alfred Strike Pascoe. This station was the terminus of the Helston railway from Gwinear through Nancegollan to Helston. It was proposed extending the line to the Lizard and the bus service was put in place to test its viability. The buses carried 22 passengers and it is estimated that they saved the £85,000 cost of building a railway. Great Western Railway took over the line before it was nationalised and closed in the 1960s under the Beeching Act. The tablet reads, “This tablet commemorates the opening of the first railway motor omnibus service which was run by the Great Western Railway from Helston to The Lizard 17th August 1903”
