Item: Making crab pots at Porthgwarra
Description: A basket maker weaves the withies through the upright canes. The workshop is in Porthgwarra, a small fishing port near Porthcurno, and this job would be done on a day when it was too rough to put to sea. The pot is set on a capstan to ensure even weaving and to take the weight. Withies, as piled in the left hand corner, are reeds or thin branches of bushes or trees, which would be collected locally and soaked well before use. Canes would get the same treatment. The man on the right is stripping the bark from the cane. No doubt the shavings would be put to good use! Two men could make six pots in one day.
