Item: Coverack Lifeboat William Taylor of Oldham standing by the m.v.Citrine of Glasgow, 1956
Description: It would seem that Penhaul took this photograph from the Lizard lifeboat or from the aircraft from Culdrose which dropped starshells to illuminate the scene. In a 60 mile-an-hour gale, the Coverack lifeboat was launched at 0120 hours, the Lizard lifeboat five minutes later. The William Taylor reached the Citrine at 0150 hours and the casualty began to sink at 0150 hours. Some of the crew tried to launch the ship's lifeboat but it fouled and capsized throwing them into the sea. Three men scrambled back on board and Coverack lifeboat rescued four men from the water. Then the coxswain took the Coverack lifeboat in over the port quarter which was submerged. Three men grabbed the bow lifelines and were dragged clear as the lifeboat went full astern again. One of the rescued men died.
