Item: The Pilchard Canning Factory in Newlyn
Description: Beth Brownfield and Betty McClary are on the left of the picture, the former perhaps dressed in her best jacket for the photograph; but she may be wearing a pvc apron. The factory was by Newlyn Slip in the area occupied previously by Parodi, fish exporter of Italy and in 2012 by Trelawny Fish. Cornish Canners Ltd was started by Shiphams of Chichester who also made fish paste and had a factory at Long Rock. The company had their own boat, The Chichester Lass was skippered by Joe Brownfield whose portrait was used in their advertising. One crew member was John Foster Tonkin.
