Item: Penzance Spring Show 1954
Description: This photograph was taken from the balcony of St Johns Hall, Penzance. Later it was removed and the stage built at the opposite side of the hall beside the entrance doors. The Mayor and his wife with Lord and Lady St Levan (patrons) are seated behind the lady speaker. Gleaming prize silver trophies are on the floor waiting to be presented. The stage is a glorious scene of palm leaves, colourful plants and pots of daffodils. Boxes of daffodils line the edge of the stage with three ladies in berets, one in a fur coat, examining them. Penzance boasts hosting the first Spring Show in the country because of its mild climate. Daffodils and broccoli were the main entries in the 1950s. In 2012, daffodils are on the market in October/ November so that by March the season is virtually over.
