Item: An Iraqi student of April 1957 demonstrating a seed fiddle
Description: This young lady is pictured with an aero seeder, commonly known as a seed fiddle. It would be used to sow small seeds such as grass, clovers and kale on some small farms where there was no corn drill. Small fields would be sown with wheat, barley or oats as the farmer walked along. The right arm worked the bow in time with the left leg whilst the spinner plate would throw an arc of seed to about 12’ to 14’. This is one of a series of photographs Harry Penhaul took of the formal visit to West Cornwall in April 1957of these students from Iraq.
