Item: Building a hand mow of oats
Description: Mr Cyril Richards of Lower Trevaylor Farm, Gulval was known locally as "Gobbins." He is building a hand mow of oats. After the corn was cut with the binder it would be put into shocks of 6 sheaves. After a week or so the sheaves would be built into a hand mow of about ten shocks. It was now considered 'saved' and would be left out to dry in the field until pulled in to a rick or directly to the thrashing machine. Cyril Richards was one of the last farmers to work his farm completely with horses. He died in 1968 aged 61.
