Identification

Item: A threshing team pose for a photograph during harvest

Description: This picture shows a break in the gathering in of the harvest. The man on the right has to feed corn into the machine; the man on the third right is the pitcher to toss the hay to him. The driver is fifth on the right. Burrells traction engines were built at the Thetford Works in Norfolk. The one in the picture could be a 7hp nine and a half ton compound. In 1856 Burrells built the first road haulage steam engine. The company closed in 1928. It was not unusual to have as many as 18 in a thrashing crew, 3 pitching, 3 or 5 carrying corn, 1 monitoring the water level, 3 on the bundles, 1 driver and others pulling out dust, one cutting binds.
