Item: Medal presentation by Lord Lieutenant Sir Edward Bolitho at St John's Hall, Penzance.
Description: Taken on the steps of St John's Hall, Penzance, this is a photograph of Lord Lieutenant Sir Edward Bolitho, reading the citation prior to presenting the British Empire Medal (BEM) to police constable 317, Godfrey Matthews. The BEM was announced in the Queen's New Years Honours List. Constable Matthews was awarded the BEM (Civil) for brave conduct at St Just on 9.8.1954 when he descended a sheer cliff to rescue the body of a man who had fallen from the cliff. At this time, Constable Matthews had been in the police for 1 year and 5 months and was aged 24. From Left to Right in the photograph: William Hendy Mumford caretaker of St John's Hall; the next two men are unknown; J.H.D. Nicholas, Deputy Town Clerk of Penzance; next man unknown; J.S. Stephens, Mayor of Penzance; Major E. Hare Chief Constable of Cornwall Constabulary; next two men are unknown; Lord Lieutenant Sir Edward Bolitho; W.T Warren Chairman of St Just Council; Rose Keirl, sister of Constable Matthews but the remainder of the attendees are unknown apart from Police Constable 317 Godfrey Matthews.
