Item: The Annual Methodist Whit Monday service at Gwennap Pit, c.1950s
Description: John Wesley is said to have preached 18 times in this hollow in the midst of a thriving mining community at Gwennap. The annual remembrance of those occasions with a service on Whit Monday is eagerly enjoyed by the Methodist community. It is said that this spot was chosen to shelter John Wesley from the wind, a feature of this area which can make it rather bleak. This pit was remodelled with 12 tiers of seating in the 20th century to accommodate 2,000 people. More information is offered on the Cornwall Methodist website and there is a museum adjacent to this site.
