Item: The windjammer "Pamir" rounding the Lizard in June 1949
Description: The Pamir was built in the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg, where she was launched on 29 July 1905. She had a long career as a merchant vessel. In reporting the ship's loss in Hurricane Carrie off the Azores on 20 September 1957 in which only 6 men survived, the Cornishman of 26 September 1957 used this photograph of the windjammer taken in June 1949 from a Rapide flying over the Lizard at 200'. On the 128 day journey to Falmouth, she was the last windjammer to carry a commercial load to round Cape Horn, on 11 July 1949.
