Item: The Traute Sarnow aground at Gurnard's Head
Description: The Traute Sarnow was a 200 ton German cargo vessel which was wrecked off Gurnard's Head on 25 July 1954 whilst en route from Cardiff to Ostend. All six members of the crew were rescued but the vessel was badly holed and a salvage operation was considered impossible. The ship broke up within a matter of days and for a short while she became a tourist attraction. This picture shows her aground, with her bows nearly against the rocks. On an even keel and apparently in good trim fore and aft, she was probably on the bottom throughout her length as she was high and dry despite her full cargo of coal. The sea is calm. The ship's lifeboat had been swung out to starboard on a derrick, but the prompt services of the LSA and lifeboat rendered its launch unnecessary.
