Item: The Traute Sarnow running aground at Gurnard's Head, 1954
Description: The Traute Sarnow was a 200 ton German cargo vessel which was wrecked off Gurnard's Head on 25 July 1954 whilst en route from Cardiff to Ostend. All six members of the crew were rescued but the vessel was badly holed and a salvage operation was considered impossible. The ship broke up within a matter of days and for a short while she became a tourist attraction. This photo was taken sometime after she ran aground. She had settled and her decks are awash in an increasing ground sea. Her hatches remain secure and a boarding ladder is perched on her starboard bow.
